Now, Perd is a Parks and Rec staple, with Pawnee TV shows like Ya Heard? With Perd!, The Final Word With Perd, and his movie review program Lights, Camera, Perd! ("It's a heartwarming story, but it's just not believable, which is why I give E.T. 1 1/2 stars.") Jackson remembers, "There was another show that they were going to develop and I don't think it happened. Eventually, all the other writers liked to write for Perd." "It was Alan who took it and ran with it as far as writing and pitching and producing and putting me in episodes. "He was the one who is really responsible for Perd Hapley because he wrote all of those crazy lines," Jackson, who worked as a reporter for a CBS station in Los Angeles before landing the role, tells EW. If you're a fan of Jay Jackson's take on Pawnee's newsman, who first appeared in season 2, you have writer-producer Alan Yang to thank. The subject of this story is a different person: Pawnee television anchor Perd Hapley. Joan was initially described in the casting call as "not a very good show host - small-town and just not very skilled," according to the MADtv alum. "I was thinking at the time, 'None of that will be usable.'" Turns out, all of it was. Director Dean Holland told Collins to keep shifting into a different passed-out position every time Ron took a call. "Until somebody says 'cut,' I keep going."Įxample: The season 5 scene from episode 13 ("Emergency Response") where Joan passed out on air in front of Ron, forcing him to answer viewer calls. "One thing that happens when you get Mo Collins on set, I tend to improv," Collins tells EW. Similarly, when Mo Collins was on set, Poehler would say, "Mo's here, just let the camera roll." Even when she passed out drunk on the air, her crew knew better than to turn off the cameras. There was no taming self-proclaimed "legendary newswoman" Joan Callamezzo.

What’s better than going to a bar? A painting party at Muse Paintbar, where you learn to paint in a social atmosphere that happens to serve snacks and beverages, including alcohol. Muse Paintbar has 11 locations just in New England, with more beyond, and we were grateful to be invited to their location at Patriot Place in Foxboro, Massachusetts for this review. You pay an inexpensive fee and join a class with a twist of party experience. You learn to paint with acrylics, onto either a 16″ x 20″ canvas, wine glasses, or mason jars. Muse is a local favourite for dining and drinking. At the end of the class, if you like your work you can take it home with you. Welcome to Muse Bar & Restaurant We are located in the beautiful setting of Uppermill, Saddleworth. Admission includes a drink but of course they hope that you’ll buy more. At Patriot Place, you’ll find red wine, white wine, beer, and snacks including a hummus platter, chips and dip, baby carrots and dip, pretzels, chicken fingers, pizza, meatballs, and ice cream. I’d just been to review PopUp Painting in London, a similar event, and am glad to say that we enjoyed Muse Paintbar more, because it was better organized and led, hosted in a space wholly dedicated to painting classes. (There is no regular bar seating.) Classes take place 7 days a week, giving you an option for a slow Monday, and allowing you to pick from their website which work you are most interested to paint. Our night, a Monday, drew more than 30 people, which only filled half of the place. When you arrive you’re given a smock and a seat at a work table with a blank canvas and palette of colors. The class alternates between instruction from a single teacher, and recent pop music as you try to paint. For more of her work and that of the journal, please visit class is well organized and our instructor, who thankfully had a microphone, was easily heard, painting each step along with the class, unlike our recent experience making pottery in Brookline where the instructor dumped 10 steps on us before we touched the clay. "You can come in and you can get caught up in the painting, and for that two-and-a- half hours you're not thinking about anything else other than just kind of perfecting your piece," Finch said.ĭanielle Brody is a reporter for the Westchester County Business Journal. People often tell him the experience is therapeutic. New and experienced painters are welcome to stray from the instructions and use different colors or add their own creative elements, Finch said. Events for kids and families typically cost $29 per person, Finch said.įinch said while people learn to paint in the class, it is not academic. A painting session typically costs $35, which provides a canvas, apron and painting supplies. He said Muse also provides a curated selection of beer and wine. "You may not be able to see the instructor the right way." "We like having our own locations so we can really invest and create the artistic vibe and optimize for this exact experience, as opposed to in bars you just kind of throw a few things together," he said. There is a stage for the instructor to lead the class, and an assistant walks around helping painters. The approximately 3,000-square-foot space in White Plains will have a main studio with separate rooms for private events, so multiple events can be held simultaneously. The traveling business offers a similar experience to Muse's in existing bars, usually on an otherwise slow night.įinch said a venue solely for painting creates a better experience because it is specifically built for that purpose. He said the business also matched his retail experience and Leigh's artistic background.Ī similar business, Paint Nite, is also active in Westchester. "We thought a business like this would be really fun to start and to run," he said. He said he originally saw the concept in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The paint bar serves tapas-style food that people can eat while painting, like bruschetta, hummus platters and spinach and feta triangles.įinch and his co-founder Vanessa Leigh, an artist and actress, opened their first location in Manchester, N.H., in 2012. Finch said instructors talk about half the time, giving people time to socialize. Painting sessions last two to two and a half hours with a break included for painters to catch up, eat and drink.
